KW - zones KW - Zoogeography AB - A total of 71 species of the spider subfamily Coelotinae are recorded from Yunnan, China. The seven species that belong to the Coelotes pseudoterrestris species group were revised by Wang et al. (2009). Three species of the genus Pireneit- ega, one species of the genus Platocoelotes will be studied in a future revision of the genera. The rest of the 60 Dracon- arius species are described in this study, including 26 new species. All the new species were collected during a 10 year inventory of the Gaoligongshan Mountains in western Yunnan by the California Academy of Sciences and the Hunan Normal University: Draconarius adnatus sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. anceps sp. nov. ([female]), D. catillus sp. nov. ([male]), D. curvus sp. nov. ([female]), D. duplus sp. nov. ([female]), D. euryembolus sp. nov. ([male]), D. gigas sp. nov. ([male]), D. guoi sp. nov. ([female]), D. improprius sp. nov. ([female]), D. kavanaughi sp. nov. ([male]), D. laticavus sp. nov. ([female]), D. latusincertus sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. levyi sp. nov. ([female][male]), D. longlingensis sp. nov. ([male]), D. mikrommatos sp. nov. ([female]), D. olorinus sp. nov. ([female]), D. paraspiralis sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. pseudoagrestis sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. pseudospiralis sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. quattour sp. nov. ([female]), D. renalis sp. nov. ([female]), D. spiralis sp. nov. ([male][female]), D. tangi sp. nov. ([male]), D. tridens sp. nov. ([male]), D. xuae sp. nov. ([female]), and D. yani sp. nov. ([female]). Five species are transferred from Coelotes to Draconarius: Draconarius degeneratus (Liu & Li 2009) comb. nov., D. introhamatus (Xu & Li 2006) comb. nov., D. laohuanglongensis (Liu & Li 2009) comb. nov., D. noctulus (Wang, Yin, Peng & Xie 1990) comb. nov. and D. uncatus (Liu & Li 2009) comb. nov. The males are described for the first time for D. capitulatus Wang 2003, D. pseudobrunneus Wang 2003 and D. pseudocapitulatus Wang 2003. Significant morpho- logical variation in the epigynum and vulva was found in some relatively widespread species, particularly the D. incertus species group, although the males show relatively consistant palpal morphology. Some Draconarius species placement remains uncertain, we prefer to leave them in this genus for now. Gaoligongshan Coelotinae is found to have high levels of species diversity and endemism, and is similar to the species from central and southern China, Himalayas and Thai- land. In addition to many species with their own unique characteristics, members belonging to seven species groups are recognized from Gaoligongshan, including Coelotes pseudoterrestris group species from Yunnan and Thailand; Dracon- arius spiralis group species endemic to Gaoligongshan; Draconarius incertus group species from southwestern China; Draconarius lutulentus group species from the Himalayas to central and southern China; Draconarius laticavus group species from Himalayas and Yunnan; Draconarius gurkha group species from Himalayas and Yunnan; and Draconarius terebratus group species from Yunnan. But no Draconarius venustus group species, which are widespread in East Asia, has been collected from Gaoligongshan. A key to Draconarius from Yunnan is provided. KW - zones AB - Two spider species of the subfamily Coelotinae from Japan, Coelotes decolor Nishikawa 1973 and Hypocoelotes tumidivulva (Nishikawa 1980), are revised. We focus particularly on the female vulva structures, which are illustrated and described for the first time. Both species have unique genitalic structures compared with other coelotines. The female Coe totes decolor is similar to C. akakinaensis Shimojana 2000 and C. iheyaensis Shimojana 2000 in having long spermathecal stalks, but no species have been found to be similar to Hypocoelotes tumidivulva. KW - zones AB - The hobo spider, Tegenaria agrestis (Walckenaer), and the related Tegenaria duellica Simon are very similar European spiders that have become well established in the northwestern United States and British Columbia. The hobo spider is considered to be medically important; T. duellica is considered harmless but is often misidentified as the hobo spider. The current distribution of the hobo spider includes southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, northern Utah, the western half of Montana, western Wyoming, and two small, isolated populations in Colorado. T. duellica is found mostly west of the Cascade and Coastal mountain ranges from southern British Columbia to central Oregon. In large human population centers where both species are sympatric, T. duellica is usually more common than the hobo spider. Data from a total of 1,232 hobo spiders and 395 T. duellica are included in this study. KW - zones AB - Mt. Hallasan is well known as the highest mountain in South Korea and speciality of geographic condition and climate, a diversity in plants and animals there were found. According to these factors, this area could be ideal for intensive studies of community ecology and vertical distribution by the altitude. On this, authors have investigated on the spiders of this area during the period from July 1984 to September 1985 to select 6 sites in a same direction by the altitude (A site of 800m above sea-level, nearby Tem. Chonwangsa; B site of 1,000m above sea-level, Orimok; C site of 1,200m above sea-level, middle of Sajebitongsan; D site of 1,400m above sea-level, top of Sajebitongsan; E site of 1,600m above sea-level, Mansetongsan, T site of 1,950m above sea-level, Paengnoktam). A total of 2,229 individuals of 100 species belonging to 66 genera of 17 families were collected in this area. Among these species, the dominant species were Coelotes quadrativulvus (43.5%), Pardosa lugubris (7.2%) and Neoantistea quelpartensis (6.2%). Vertical distribution of species by the altitude was the most abundant in B site composed of 735 individuals of 73 species belonging to 54 genera of 16 families. Coelotes quadrativulvus in A, B, C, D, E site and Pardosa palustris in T site were the dominant species respectively. As a whole, surface and subterranean species, Agelenidae, collected equally without reference to the altitude and hunting spider, Lycosidae, collected in abundance in the above 1,400m altitude. Species diversity (H') reached its peak in the B site and Evenness(J') had little differences except B site where this index (0.268) was highest. KW - Tegenaria agrestis [Population dynamics / Breeding population KW - zones KW - Zoogeography AB - The media coverage was intense when the Hobo spider, Tegenaria agrestis (Walckenaer, 1802) (Fig. 1), was first recorded for Denmark in 2005 in connection with a joint Swedish-Danish entomological survey of the new artificial island Peberholm, situated in Oresund between Sweden and Denmark. Few people knew that the spider had already been found in eastern Jutland in 2002, since this finding had not been published. The Hobo spider was broadcasted on TV and in newspapers for a few days, and it even inspired two Danish medical doctors to publish a paper on the first possible Hobo spider bite in Denmark, even though neither patient nor doctors had seen or found any spider. The Hobo spider is widespread in Europe but had not been officially re-corded from Scandinavia prior to 2005. In the southern part of Europe it is found in natural habitats, often in dry open areas, but it can also be found in forest clearings and along forest edges. In northern Europe it is mainly associated with wastelands, around construction sites, railway areas and harbours. Except for the Danish "case" above, there are no records of medical problems with Tegenaria agrestis in Europe. It was introduced to North America in the beginning of the last century, and here it is mainly found in houses, where it is considered aggressive and dangerous. There are many medical reports on spider bites and necrotic wounds caused by Tegenaria agrestis. Due to the potential problems with this species, we decided to perform a survey in order to: 1) check the occurrence and distribution of Tegenaria agrestis on Zealand, 2) search for egg sacs to determine whether Tegenaria agrestis is established and breed in Denmark, 3) investigate potential routes of dispersal into Denmark, and 4) decide whether Tegenaria agrestis can be considered an invasive species. We checked 28 suitable localities on Zealand (Table 1, Fig. 13) in the period September 26 to November 3, 2008, and found adult Tegenaria agrestis on 22 of these. Most specimens were found under wooden logs, boards, etc. (Figs 4[long dash]9), at wastelands associated with railway areas (Fig. 2), construction sites or harbors (Fig. 3). Records from other parts of Europe were collected from a large number of helpful colleagues and from the literature, and geo referenced records were used to construct a map showing the records of Tegenaria agrestis within 10 years intervals. (Fig. 12). From this it can be seen that the oldest records are from southern Europe, and that northern Europe mainly has more recent records. The map (Fig. 12) shows that Tegenaria agrestis has been spreading northwards. For instance in the United Kingdom, where the species was first recorded from southern UK in 1949, then subsequently re-corded from Wales and England in the following years, from southern Scot-land in 1971 and northern Scotland in 2006. The records also show that it was first recorded from Ireland in 2000. Egg sacs (Figs 10[long dash]11) were found at most localities in Denmark, proving that Tegenaria agrestis is breeding in Denmark. Due to the late time of the year, only a single male was found. Tegenaria agrestis has not yet been recorded from Norway and Finland, but has been found at three localities in southern Sweden since 2005 (Malmo, Ystad and Kristanstad). The literature supports the general distribution tendency shown on Fig. 12, with the first records from southern Europe predating the 1950s and subsequent first records from northern European countries after 1950. All Danish records of Tegenaria agrestis are mapped on Fig. 13. Given the distribution of Tegenaria agrestis on Zealand, we expect the species to be wide-spread elsewhere in Denmark. All findings of Tegenaria agrestis in Denmark are associated with harbors, construction sites and railway areas, and it is therefore likely that the species has been introduced to Denmark with goods and building materials. It seems to be dependent on open warm habitats, like those associated with waste grounds, and it is therefore highly unlikely that the species will be able to spread to natural habitats in Denmark, except perhaps sand dunes and heathlands. In Denmark, Tegenaria agrestis has been found together with Tegenaria atrica, Amaurobius fenestralis and Textrix denticulatus [long dash] species that occur naturally on the localities where 7: agrestis have been found. Therefore, there is not yet any reason to assume that T. agrestis is invasive, i.e, an alien species whose introduction and/or spread threatens local biodiversity. There is no reason to fear Tegenaria agrestis more than any other Tegenaria species, since there is no proven connection between bites of this species and the medical problems reported in the literature. None of these medical cases seems to be based on a correctly identified T. agrestis. The authors of this paper can confirm that common house spiders, Tegenaria atrica and T. domestics, can indeed bite, when provoked, and their fangs can penetrate the human skin, but aside from the pain the fangs generate when they penetrate the skin (like a pin prick), the bites have no additional effect, and do not generate any tissue damage. Three species, Agelena ocellata (Agelenidae), Euprosthenops proximus (Pisauridae) and Smeringopus pallidus (Pholcidae), coexisted in the burrows. The number of individuals and the number of species inhabiting the burrows increased with burrow size. Gerbil burrows were apparently too small to provide space for more than one individual of any of the three species. Only the burrows of springhares, warthogs, and antbears contained more than one spider. When artificial burrows were provided a rapid increase in settlement resulted. Competition for space therefore seems to be the determining factor influencing the population size. A relatively low number of prey items (136, in 119 webs) were found in agelenid webs only. Kleptoparasitic ants were observed stealing prey items from the webs. Here we investigate the geographic distributions and interactions of species in the Tegenaria atrica group (Araneae: Agelenidae). Detailed mapping of T. saeva and T. gigantea in England and Wales shows them to be broadly allopatric in southern England with a tightly defined, and possibly long-standing, narrow zone of parapatry in central southern England. In the north of England (Yorkshire), by contrast, the species are broadly sympatric as a result of recent range expansions. GIS techniques are used to map the species distributions and to quantify, we believe for the first time, the intimacy of interspecific interactions. The extent and nature of hybridization in these two areas is examined through regression and multivariate analyses of morphology. We show that the relative incidence of hybridization is much greater in Yorkshire than within the parapatric zone in the south. Clear patterns of asymmetric introgression are observed in both northern and southern England, with a greater impact of T. gigantea on T. saeva than vice versa. We find no sign of morphological reproductive character displacement at the zone of parapatry that might indicate reinforcement, although we cannot exclude more subtle effects, for example via cuticular pheromones. The integrity of these two species seems to be breaking down in northern England, a process that might gain momentum as the gene pools become more similar. Pooled density of the seven most abundant spider species did not differ significantly between day and night sampling, nor did density of Cheiracanthium inclusum (Miturgidae), Trachelas pacificus (Corrinidae), Oxyopes spp. (Oxyopidae) or Neoscona oaxacensis (Araneidae). Under day sampling Metaphidippus vitis (Salticidae) was 60% more abundant and Hololena nedra (Agelenidae) more than 2.5 fold more abundant than under night sampling. Daytime sampling generally resulted in a higher percentage of capture for each spider taxa analyzed, but neither of the diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener, Simpson or Bray-Curtis) showed any difference between day and night sampling. Parameters generated by Taylor's power law indicate a uniform distribution for most spider taxa, which was not affected by sampling time with the exception of H. nedra. We suggest that at vineyard sites in California with a similar spider community, sampling can be limited to daylight hours if a sampling method is used which is sufficiently vigorous to dislodge spiders from their resting places. This species recently colonized the US where it has been accused of bites that result in necrotic lesions and systemic effects in humans. One possible explanation of this pattern is the US spiders have unique venom characteristics. This study compares whole venoms from US and European populations to look for unique US characteristics, and to increase our understanding of venom variability within species. This study compared venoms from T. agrestis males and females from Marysville, Washington (US), Tungstead Quarry, England (UK) and Le Landeron, Switzerland, by means of liquid chromatography; and the US and UK populations by insect bioassays. Chromatographic profiles were different between sexes, but similar within sexes between US and UK populations. Venoms from the Swiss population differed subtly in composition from UK and US venoms. No peaks were unique to the US population. Intersexual differences were primarily in relative abundance of components. Insect assays revealed no differences between US and UK venom potency, but female venoms were more potent than male. These results are difficult to reconcile with claims of necrotic effects that are unique to venoms of US Tegenaria.
