In this spider species, 75 different compounds were detected by GC in the female and 36-41 in the young. Then these compounds were identified by GC-MS as mainly acids, methylesters, n-alkanes and monomethylalkanes containing 17-39 carbon atoms. The transition from gregarious to solitary life is accompanied by changes in agonistic behavior and in the composition of cuticular compounds. During the gregarious period, very few qualitative changes were observed in the level of synthesis/release of cuticular products of the young. After dispersal of the young, one n-alkane (n-heneicosane) and two monomethylalkanes (3-methylpentacosane and 14 -+ 12 -+ 10-methyltriacontane) appeared, when in three other compounds proportional changes were observed. The adult females had many more compounds, one part being the same as the young with different proportions, another part being new compounds, essentially hydrocarbons.}, keywords = {[Cuticle / / ] [Chemical signals / / ] [Aggregating behaviour / /, Behaviour, Biochemistry, Changes during gregarious period \& after dispersal of young], changes in synthesis \& release of cuticular compounds]., Communication, compounds] [Distribution within habitat / / Dispersal of young \&, Ecology, Gregarious period \& changes in synthesis \& release of cuticular, Integument, release, Social behaviour, Tegenaria atrica (Araneae)., Tegenaria atrica [Biochemistry / / Cuticular compound synthesis \&}, isbn = {0965-1748}, url = {://ZOOREC:ZOOR13300008284}, author = {Trabalon, Marie and Bagneres, Anne G. and Hartmann, Nadine and Vallet, Anne M.} } @article {475, title = {Relationships among cannibalism, contact signals, ovarian development and ecdysteroid levels in Tegenaria atrica (Araneae, Agelenidae)}, journal = {Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology}, volume = {28}, year = {1998}, note = {ZOOR13500034484}, month = {1998}, pages = {751-758}, abstract = {The present investigation was designed to study the relationships between the reproductive state of Tegenaria atrica females and their agonistic behavior towards conspecific females. Our results show that the virgin females exhibit the lowest levels of agonistic behavior whereas they provoke the highest levels of cannibalism by the mated females. The virgin females can be clearly distinguished from the other females as regards synthesis/release of cuticular compounds: methylesters and hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the ovaries of these females have not yet started vitellogenesis and the haemolymphatic ecdysteroids levels are high. It appears that the variation of females cannibalism parallels ovarian development and could be related to changes in cuticular compounds. Our results show for the first time that changes in spiders sexual and parental behavior during the reproductive cycle are accompanied by characteristic modifications in cuticular compounds, ovarian development as well as haemolymphatic ecdysteroid levels.}, keywords = {[Ovary / / ] [Agonistic behaviour / / Ovarian development, / / Ovarian development \& cannibalism by females towards conspecifics], Behaviour, cannibalism by females towards conspecifics] [Hormones / / ] [Oogenesis, Circulatory system, Communication, compounds \& ecdysteroid relationships] [Chemical signals / / ]., compounds \& ecdysteroids] [Haemolymph / / Ecdysteroid levels \&, conspecifics, cuticular, Endocrinology, females towards conspecifics] [Diet / / Cannibalism by females towards, Gametogenesis, Gonad, Integument, Nutrition, Relationships with ovarian development, Reproduction, Reproductive system, Tegenaria atrica (Araneae)., Tegenaria atrica [Cuticle / / Cuticular compounds \& cannibalism by}, isbn = {0965-1748}, url = {://ZOOREC:ZOOR13500034484}, author = {Trabalon, Marie and Pourie, Gregory and Hartmann, Nadine} }
